Berlin. 13. Januar 2011. (and).

After Church Bombing, SAT-7 and the Egyptian Church Partner to Witness to the Prince of Peace

After Church Bombing, SAT-7 and the Egyptian Church Partner to Witness to the Prince of Peace

Daily live TV shows give Egyptian church leaders opportunity to call for peace, to calm the enraged and to explain the gospel.

London. January 6, 2011/3mnews.org/– On 31st December 2010, a car bomb exploded in front of the Two Saints Church in Alexandria, Egypt, killing 21 worshippers and injuring more than 70 others. In the days afterward members of the Christian minority in Egypt, who make up as much as 10% of the country’s population, began demonstrations around the country. In Alexandria itself, according to news reports, the bombing sparked street clashes between police and angry Copts, who hurled stones and stormed a nearby mosque. Numerous demonstrations also occurred in Cairo.

In response to escalating tensions, SAT-7 ARABIC interrupted its normal broadcasts. The channel instead offered live programming from its Cairo studio to give local Church leaders a chance to respond and minister to people during this difficult situation. These leaders used the daily live shows to urge their congregations, and the wider community, to work for peace and not destruction.

During one of the shows, Pastor Sameh Maurice of the Kasr El Dobarah Church (the largest Evangelical Church in the Middle East) and Father Samaan Ibrahim of the Coptic Orthodox Church, directly responded to callers living in different parts of Egypt, including Alexandria. Many called to express anger over the bombing, their frustration with the government’s handling of the situation, and their resentment over the general treatment of Christians in the country. Pastor Sameh and Father Samaan encouraged viewers to remember that the Christian message is a message of love and peace. They agreed that people are allowed to be angry and sad about the situation but also need to transform their emotions into heartfelt prayer. They pointed out that the true enemy of Christians is Satan, not people, and that we should consider members of other religions not as enemies but as friends with whom we are sharing our earthly journey together.

While numerous viewers called to vent raw emotions, most of the calls were from people expressing sympathy for the injured and the families of the victims, and people wanting to send messages of encouragement to all who were caught up in the tragedy.

Pastor Sameh shared that he was already seeing some good come from this terrible situation; that in fact many Muslim citizens in Egypt were also outraged at the treatment Christians were receiving and are now saying they want to work to change the situation in the country. He stated that a number of Muslim leaders are even willing to participate in the Eastern Christmas Eve Mass on the evening of 6th January and during services on the 7th. Both Pastor Sameh and Father Samaan asked the audience to be wise and calm and not to seek revenge or to participate in violent demonstrations.

In another live programme on the ARABIC channel of SAT-7, the well-known Orthodox priest Father Makari Younan talked openly and boldly about the issues that lead to such problems. But he and other hosts also talked about the danger of misrepresenting Christianity through protests where angry sentiments are shouted in the streets. Father Makari specifically warned that “It is nonsense for Christians to shout, ‘We protect the Cross with our own blood and souls.’ The cross is the symbol of our salvation; it is what protects us, not otherwise.”

SAT-7’s special live shows will continue in the lead up to the Coptic Christmas holiday held annually on 7th January (in accordance with the Eastern Orthodox calendar) allowing viewers further opportunities to express their feelings and to receive Godly counsel during these difficult days in Egypt. Hosts on these shows have reminded viewers that the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church has called for all Christians to fast until 7th January, to repent of their sins and to pray for peace and fairness to flourish in the land of Egypt.

In addition to the live shows, SAT-7 sent many messages of condolence to Christian leaders of all denominations in Egypt, expressed unity with our Egyptian brothers and sisters and delivered Bibles to those victims recovering in hospitals. SAT-7 presses forward as a voice of peace and moderation, encouraging prayer and reflection during these difficult times.

Imprisoned Iranian Women Refuse to Deny Their Faith

Imprisoned Iranian Women Refuse to Deny Their Faith

Open Doors Launches Campaign Urging Iran to Release Christians Now

SANTA ANA, Calif., Nov. 5 /Christian Newswire/ — On August 9 two Christian women appeared before an Iranian judge who asked them to deny their faith and return to Islam. Maryam Rostampour, 27, and Marzieh Amirizadeh Esmaeilabad, 30, have been held in the notorious Evin prison in Tehran since March 5. They were originally accused of “acting against state security” and “taking part in illegal gatherings,” according to Compass Direct News. When both women refused to recant their faith, the judge sent them back to their prison cells “to think about it,” according to a source who spoke with family members.

“When they said, ‘Think about it,’ it means you are going back to jail,” said the source, according to Compass. “This is something we say in Iran. It means: ‘Since you’re not sorry, you’ll stay in jail for a long time, and maybe you’ll change your mind.'”

The source said the first goal of judges in such cases is usually to make “apostates” deny their faith through threats or by sending them back to prison for a longer time.

The women re-appeared in court on Oct. 7. The anti- state charge was dropped but they still face “apostasy” and “propagation of the Christian faith” charges.

Also, the women have undergone intense interrogations which have reportedly included sleep deprivation and other psychological pressure. They share a cell with over 20 other women and both have deteriorating health. Marzieh suffers from spinal pain, an infected tooth and intense headaches and is especially in need of medical attention, which has not been provided. Evin prison has received criticism for its human rights violations and executions in recent years.

On Oct. 26, the U.S. State Department designated Iran, along with seven other countries, as “Countries of Particular Concern” for their religious repression. The Islamic Republic reportedly imprisoned, harassed and intimidated people based on their religious beliefs, while government-controlled broadcast and print media intensified negative campaigns against religious minorities, the report said. Iran is ranked No. 3 on Open Doors’ World Watch List of countries where Christians suffer the most severe persecution.

The Open Doors USA advocacy department is launching a campaign asking people to send a respectful message to Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Khazaee, who is Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York City. The email messages will be sent to the government in Iran as well. The letters will ask for the immediate release of Maryam and Marzieh.

A sample email letter to send is located at the Open Doors USA website at http://www.OpenDoorsUSA.org. Please do not refer to Open Doors in your email.

“Maryam and Marzieh are suffering in an Iranian prison simply for refusing to recant their belief in Jesus Christ…they truly are modern heroes of the faith,” says Open Doors USA President/CEO Dr. Carl Moeller. “We must speak out against this injustice. Join our campaign urging the Iranian government to release these women.”

Pray for Maryam and Marzieh Sunday, Nov. 8, during the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church.

An estimated 100 million Christians worldwide suffer interrogation, arrest and even death for their faith in Christ, with millions more facing discrimination and alienation. Open Doors supports and strengthens believers in the world’s most difficult areas through Bible and Christian literature distribution, leadership training and assistance, Christian community development, prayer and presence ministry and advocacy on behalf of suffering believers. Journalist Lumturie Blakaj physically assaulted in Kosovo

Journalist Lumturie Blakaj physically assaulted in Kosovo

Vienna. December23, 2010/Seemo/ – The South and East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO), a network of editors, media executives and leading journalists from South, East and Central Europe and an affiliate of the International Press Institute (IPI), is deeply concerned about the physical assault on Lumturie Blakaj, journalist working for the daily newspaper Zeri, in Kosovo. According to Blakaj, she was attacked on 20 December 2010 by an unknown perpetrator in front of the UNMIK building in Pristina. The attacker started punching Blakaj furiously in the back and proceeded by dragging her seven meters along the ground. The moment the perpetrator started punching Blakaj, three young men who witnessed the assault helped her and the perpetrator ran away.

Blakaj immediately reported the assault to the police, claiming that she did not recognize the perpetrator and has no information as to why he attacked her so viciously.

The next day, police spokesman Baki Kelani said the police have launched investigations.

“SEEMO strongly condemns all physical attacks on journalists, which have no place in a democratic society. Physical attacks such as this must be stopped from occurring in the future,” said Oliver Vujovic, SEEMO Secretary General.

“SEEMO welcomes the police investigation and calls for a full investigation into finding out not only who attacked the journalist, but also the reason behind the attack,” added Vujovic.

SEEMO also notes with unease this increasing tendency of assaults against journalists in Kosovo. It calls on the Pristina authorities to state their dedication to the protection of journalists, and press freedom in general, by taking active steps to counteract these alarming developments.

Human Rights Day 2010: Freedom to Speak Out Essential For Human Rights Defenders

Human Rights Day 2010: Freedom to Speak Out Essential For Human Rights Defenders

London. December 9, 2010/3mnews.org/Article19.org/– On the occasion of the Human Rights Day, ARTICLE 19 calls on governments to protect the freedom of expression of human rights defenders speaking out against discrimination and other human rights abuses. Human rights defenders – whether human rights monitors, activists or journalists – actively seek justice, accountability and transparency for human rights abuses by working alone or in collaboration with others, at the local, national and/or international levels. Over the past year, ARTICLE 19 has witnessed that human rights defenders across the world have faced ever increasing threats to both themselves and their families simply for exercising their the right to freedom of expression and speaking out against discrimination, exclusion, oppression and violence. This issue, which confronts states such as Mexico, Egypt, Sri Lanka and China among many others, deserves more focussed attention and action by the international community.

Yet, too often, a culture of impunity surrounds such threats and actual attacks on human rights defenders who have raised their voices against violations. The denial of human rights defenders’ rights leads to a “chilling effect” on their right to freedom of expression, impedes the public’s “right to know” and is a significant restraint upon their ability to hold state and non-state actors accountable for abuses.

ARTICLE 19 therefore urges states to properly implement their existing international human rights obligations to protect human rights defenders, including those indicated in the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. State officials or agents should not be involved directly or indirectly in targeted attacks against human rights defenders for exercising their right to speak out against human rights abuses, or any other reason. Any attacks on human rights defenders, wherever they occur, should be promptly and thoroughly investigated by a competent, independent and impartial body established by the state. The state authorities should hold accountable all persons found to have committed abuses against human rights defenders, regardless of political affiliation or rank, and according to procedures that meet international standards of due process. States should prevent, punish and redress the harm caused by state or private actors, including unidentified armed groups, to human rights defenders.

ARTICLE 19 also hopes that Human Rights Day 2010 will inspire and embolden a new generation of human rights defenders to speak up to end discrimination and other human rights violations whenever and wherever they are manifested.

SEEMO Human Rights Award 2010 To Christo Komarnitski from Bulgaria

SEEMO Human Rights Award 2010 To Christo Komarnitski from Bulgaria

Vienna, 7 December 2010/Seemo– The South and East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO), a network of editors, media executives and leading journalists in South East and Central Europe and an affiliate of the International Press institute (IPI), is pleased to announce that after careful deliberation the SEEMO Jury – composed of SEEMO Board members – has awarded the “SEEMO Human Rights Award 2010” to Christo Komarnitski, a political cartoonist for the Bulgarian daily newspaper Sega (Now) and for weeklies Sofia echo and Starshel (Hornet).

Komarnitski was born on 30 May in 1964 in Gabrovo, a town in the central part of Bulgaria.

Since 1997, Komarnitski has been working as a political cartoonist for the Bulgarian daily newspaper Sega (Now) and for weeklies Sofia echo and Starshel (Hornet). Komarnitski contributes regularly to the Cagle Cartoons Syndicate and many other periodicals.

During his career, Komarnitski has won many national and international prizes, including: Grand Prix 2009 – Bulgaria, Citation for Excellence – Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Award (2007), Promotion Prize – DONG-A-LG, Eorea (2007), Third prize – Solin, Croatia (2005), Second Prize – Golden Keg 2005, Presov, Slovakia (2005), Third Prize – Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Award (2004), First Prize – Fano Italy (1996), Fifth Prize – Taejon Korea (1996), Grand Prize – Bjelovar Croatia (1994), Honourable Mentions – Trento Italy, Tokyo Japan, Istanbul Turkey, Tolentino Italy, Prize of the Jury – Kiev, Ukraine and others.

“Very often a human rights defender can say much more with a single picture or cartoon than with tones of words. Thank goodness, we are not facing wars because of cartoons, but right now some cartoons are more precious and more worthy than many diplomatic interventions,” said Milena Dimitrova, SEEMO Board Member. For Oliver Vujovic, SEEMO Secretary General “a good cartoonist is like a good journalist”, and “we should not forget that very often cartoonists are subjected to the same kind of pressure as journalists. SEEMO has, on a number of occasions in recent years, reacted in cases in South, East and Central Europe when local cartoonists have been pressured by the state or a religion organisation”.

The “SEEMO Human Rights Award” is an annual award dedicated to International Human Rights Day on 10 December. SEEMO has been presenting the Award since 2002.

In 2002, Christine von Kohl (died 2009), founder of the Vienna-based Balkan – ” Südosteuropäischer Dialog ” magazine, received the award. In 2003, the recipient was Nebojsa Popov, founder of the Belgrade-based magazine “Republika”. Fatos Lubonja, an Albanian author, received the award in 2004. Abdulhalim Dede, a journalist and member of the Turkish-Muslim minority living and working in Western Thrace, Greece, was the 2006 recipient. Seki Radoncic, from Montenegro, author of the book, ” The Fatal Freedom, ” and active in investigating war crimes in the former Yugoslavia, received the award in 2007. The award winner in 2008 was Spomenka Hribar, a Slovenian journalist, writer and human rights advocate. Pavol Demes, an internationally recognised NGO leader and the director of the Slovakia office of the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) was the award winner in 2009.
